Things to Consider When Moving With Pets

When moving into a new home, it’s important to keep your pets comfortable during the process. If you stress your pet out during the move, they might regress on their training and act out. Here’s a few things to consider when moving with your pets. If you want to spend more time with your furry friend during the process, consider letting Element Moving and Storage handle the packing, loading, and unloading process so you can be by your animal’s side.

Make Sure They’re Allowed at Your New Place

This one’s pretty obvious. If you’re renting your new place, make sure your animals are allowed on the lease. Some leases have certain dog breeds and animals that aren’t allowed, but they have to make exceptions for service dogs and emotional support animals if you have the necessary paperwork. Sneaking an animal in without putting them on the lease might seem like a good idea, but you shouldn’t take the risk. Be a responsible pet owner and make sure your animals are allowed, or can be exempt from the rules.

Keep Them Away From the Noise

Before your moving crew comes in, find a room your animal is comfortable in and keep them there. It’s best if they have a quiet place with food, water, toys, and maybe some calming pet music (you can find tons on YouTube)  if you really want to spoil them. If your animal is prone to anxiety, this is especially important.

Prepare an Overnight Kit

You should pack the essentials last, but it’s also important to make sure your animal has everything they need on your first night in the new home. Before you pack your pet’s stuff, make a bag with their favorite toy, a day of food, some treats, their leash, medicine, and anything else they might need.

Give Them A Comfort Item

Moving can be extremely confusing and stressful to pets, especially if they’re naturally anxious. Be sure to give them a comfort item they can keep close during the process. This can be a piece of clothing that smells like you, their favorite toy, a long-lasting chew, or anything else to help them feel happy and safe during the moving process. If you’re going to be spending less time with them because of the move, giving them something with your scent can make them feel safer and more comfortable.

Move Them Last

When moving a pet, it’s important to make the process fast and easy. If you can, move your pet last and try to take them in your own vehicle, that way they don’t have to deal with the stress of you going in and out. This can also keep them out of your way during the rest of the move, and moving them in a vehicle they’re used to can keep them less anxious.
