1. Get Utilities Up and Running By Moving Day

This tip is a huge, and it’s number one on our list for a reason. Before getting down to the nitty gritty part of moving, make sure you get your utilities up and running beforehand. As soon as you find out when moving day is, schedule the transfer. It can take several days (or even weeks) before all your utilities are fully up and running. Make sure your gas, water, and electric are good to go by the day you move in—it’ll save your life!

2. As Soon as You Know When Moving Day Is, Hire Movers!

Good moving companies get booked for months in advance. For a swift and easy move, hire a reputable moving company as soon as you know your move-in day! Waiting until the last minute will land you with a limited amount of options, such as the 1-star guys who charge way too much.

Tip: we recommend Element Moving & Storage for your next move. If you choose to hire movers, go for an exemplary moving company!

3. Take Extra Time off of Work

We understand how time-consuming a move is, especially with a full-time job. However, cramming a whole move into a 2-day weekend will ensure that following Monday is miserable. To save yourself the horror, try to take a couple extra days off in addition to your weekend. Giving yourself time to sleep and unpack will save you the extra stress and fatigue.

4. Don’t Buy Any Groceries Within Two Weeks of Moving

This will save you a lot of hassle (and wasted food). For the weeks leading up to moving day, stick to eating at home. Clear out that fridge! Time to eat up! Go through the freezer, pantry and eat up any stored food.

5. Find Small, Sturdy Boxes (That Are Free!)

While many think to go for the big grocery store cardboard boxes, they’re often dirty or even pest-infested. To save yourself the hassle, look for free boxes from liquor stores or big box retailers. Or, purchase moving boxes directly from Element Moving Company. The smaller and sturdier they are, the better! Not only will they make carrying them easier, but they’re the least likely to tear or leak.

6. Sell or Donate Any Unwanted Items

To make packing much easier, go through all of your stuff and get rid of what you don’t need! Sell them at a garage sale or donate your gently used items.

7. Use a Clear Container for Important Documents

During a move, it can be easy to lose track of your items. When it comes to the important files like your tax documents, home sale documents, social security cards and passports, put them in a clear container. This will avoid the risk of misplacing or losing track of where they are.

8. Pack an Overnight Box for After the Move

Gather all the necessities you’ll need for the first night at your new place. This includes toiletries, medicines, personal items, silverware, clothing items, or hair products. After everything is moved in, you’ll be exhausted. Having an overnight box with all your needed supplies will save your life.

9. Leave Clothes on Hangers

Take the hangers off the rack with your clothes still on them, and simply wrap or bundle them in a convenient container! When you arrive at your new place, hanging them back up will be so easy (and clean!).

10. Save Your Makeup With Cotton Balls

It’s so easy for makeup products to break, spill, or leak—much less during a move! To prevent this from happening, place a cotton pad or ball on top of any powder products to prevent them from breaking.

11. Take a Picture of the Back of Your TV

When it comes to the cable box, game consoles, speakers, HDMI cables, and your Amazon Fire Stick, the back of your TV is definitely something you don’t want to struggle with at your new place. Before you unplug everything, take a picture of all your existing cables to make it as easy as possible to get back to it.

12. Clean or Dust Items as You Pack Them

This is usually the last thing on your mind, but it will save you a lot of trouble. As you pack, keep a duster or a paper towel roll with you. Give everything a quick wipe before packing them—you’ll be glad you did!
