Once your boxes are moved in and unpacked, you might be wondering what you can do next to make your new home feel homier. We think the best way to turn a house or apartment into a home is to throw an awesome housewarming party!

Housewarming parties are traditional get-togethers where guests bring food, drinks, or small gifts to warm up your new space. They can be as fancy or as low-key as you like. The important thing is to choose a theme that reflects your personality. With that said, there are some other things you can do to make sure your housewarming party is fun for everyone on the guest list – including yourself.

1). Don’t Throw it Too Soon

After your move is finished, you might need a little more time to recover than you realize. It’s no fun to rush through the unpacking and stress out over making your home presentable to guests. Consider giving yourself a couple of weeks to settle in and relax before the party. Your guests will also appreciate having more time to clear their schedules and purchase gifts after receiving their invitations.

2). Have an Open House

An open house party is a casual way to make sure everyone has an opportunity to come by even if they have other commitments that day. Instead of a definite start time, invite your guests to arrive anytime between noon and 6pm. That way, friends who have to work might be able to pop over before or after their shift, and busy guests can do a quick drop-in at a time that’s convenient for them.

3). Choose a Theme You Love

Your party’s theme can be anything you like. Have you always wanted to have a tea party or a wine tasting? Now’s the time to do it. What about a potluck fondue dinner? You could provide the cheese and chocolate and your guests could bring things to dip in them. If you’re renovating your home, throw a “paint the room” party to have fun while you get free help. Gardening, crafting, baking, and other domestic hobbies can be turned into fun housewarming party themes.

4). Plan Your Menu

The menu is another place to let your personality shine through. Would you prefer a buffet-style snack spread or a family-style meal around the dinner table? You can always go the potluck route if you’re on a tight budget. Comfort food is always a hit, especially in the colder months. For summer potlucks, provide fruits, cold salads, and plenty of ice for the drinks. Don’t forget to mix up some signature cocktails while you’re at it.

5). Make a Playlist

Every good party should have a backdrop of great music. Put together a playlist with a mixture of upbeat catchy tunes, recent hits, and timeless classics. Keep it light and happy to match your party’s theme. You’ll know you’ve done a good job when you see guests nodding along to the beat (but don’t blame us if a dance battle breaks out)!

6). Play Games

Games are a good way to get to know people who aren’t in your inner circle. Look online for popular party games to buy, or try playing some classic card games or dominos. For more casual icebreakers, try throwing a small scavenger hunt in the house or asking trivia questions about the people in your household. Keep a logbook so guests can write down their funny observations about the party. It could become a cherished keepsake.

7). House Tour!

A house tour is usually the big event everyone is waiting for at a housewarming party. This is your new home after all, and your guests are eager to see it. Don’t drag the tour out too long, but do share short, funny anecdotes about the home, situations that arose during the homebuying process, and the story behind any special items in your décor.
